Southampton Town wants a new contractor to finish its African American History Museum after the original contractor was accused of defective workmanship.

The African American History Museum will commemorate the contributions of the black community in Southampton Town. The project was expected to finish renovation in fall 2019.

But the town says William G. Prophy LLC didn’t use properly skilled workers and didn’t comply with permits for a septic system.

Southampton has partially paid the developer and is negotiating a final payment.

The town will open a new round of bids on the project in January.
