Alleged wrongdoing and misconduct by Suffolk County law enforcement will cost the county millions of dollars in settlements and litigation.
The wrongful murder conviction of Keith Bush could result in a $30 million settlement. In another case, a man who was assaulted by police while in custody received a $1.5 million settlement.
This comes as the county has amassed hundreds of millions of dollars in debt over the last decade.
Critics of police misconduct say Suffolk needs to provide more oversight and transparency to address the root of the problem.
The District Attorney’s Office recently received a federal grant to study wrongful convictions and plans to examine more than 100 cases for police misconduct.
