New York has seen its first reduction in opioid overdose deaths since 2009. That’s according to new data released Monday by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The Heroin and Opioid Task Force Progress Report shows opioid overdose deaths, outside of New York City, declined in 2018 compared to 2017.
Suffolk County saw around 300 overdose deaths in 2018, and Nassau County had about 140. Suffolk’s rate was slightly higher than the state average, while Nassau’s was lower.
The report shows both Nassau and Suffolk are on track to have a lower rate of opioid overdose deaths in 2019.
