A Southold, Long Island, man who took part in an international drug smuggling ring in the 1970s has avoided prison time.
Jacob Moritz, 72, was on the run for three decades.
He was among four men accused of smuggling more than 1,200 tons of marijuana and hashish into the U.S. and Canada from international ports between 1971 and 1986.
Moritz pleaded guilty to a lesser felony drug charge in June.
As part of a plea deal, he agreed to forfeit $2 million in assets, a bank account and the title to a property he owns on an island in South Asia.
