Veterans are twice as often the victims of identity theft and other scams.
Scott Higgins heads Veterans Advantage, a Greenwich-based group that screens services and discounts for servicemen and women. Higgins says veterans give up their IDs as a force of habit.
“You know vets are very trusting in terms of their identity. They are accustomed to showing their identity cards. It’s called a CAC when you’re in the service. It belongs to the service. You have to turn it back in now when you come off of active duty. But in previous years, you held on to it and used it in part as an identification tool.”

Several states have measures that try to protect veterans from scammers.
New York approved legislation this year that prevents businesses from earning a commission from selling unneeded products or services to veterans.
