Connecticut is one of 11 states that wrote to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission this week seeking permission to adopt stricter emissions controls than the federal standard.
Attorney General William Tong says President Donald Trump’s rollback of federal clean air regulations adopted during the Obama era is harmful to the state. That’s why Connecticut wants stricter emissions regulations.
“We need the federal government to respect the state’s prerogative to not only support renewable energy but also the control of emissions and to protect our clean air and clean water.”
Tong says Trump’s decision allows older fossil fuel power plants to continue to operate.
He says that would make it difficult for Connecticut to meet its goal of a carbon-free electric grid by 2040.
