Heart Disease, Cancer Top List Of Long Islanders' Health Concerns

The top three health concerns for residents on Long Island are heart disease, cancer and substance abuse. That’s according to an analysis by the Long Island Health Collaborative

Survey participants say that heart disease and stroke are their biggest personal health concerns. When asked about the health concerns for their community, cancer and substance abuse take the top two spots.

Janine Logan, director of the Long Island Health Collaborative, says the findings are the same as last year’s.

“We consistently see concerns about heart disease, diabetes, obesity, weight issues – those are all chronic diseases. We know chronic disease is the number one driver of health care.”

The survey also reveals that Long Islanders worry about healthier food choices, and the availability of mental health screenings.

Local hospitals use data from the collaborative’s ongoing survey to determine which health services and programs are needed across Long Island.
