Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone wants to grow a jobs program that provides part-time employment for people affected by the opioid crisis.

Bellone says it’s an important element in fighting the epidemic.

“We think this is another key element in the opioid epidemic. Key in that it’s closing the loop for people who have turned their lives around, are in recovery.”

The county received a grant this year to provide 35 residents with jobs in local not-for-profits.

“This program has been so successful that we want to expand it further. That’s why we recently applied for a similar grant for another $500,000 on behalf of the Suffolk County Workforce Development Board.”

The new grant would bring the program to Wyandanch, North Bellport, Brentwood, Central Islip and Huntington Station.
