Three voters filed a lawsuit in Bridgeport Superior Court on Monday asking for a new mayoral primary.
“If election officials and people running campaigns are also under the hot seat, and they are aware that people are watching this time and to make sure it happens in a fair way, that we will get fair results and there won’t be issues of interference or absentee ballot abuse anymore,” said Prerna Rao, who represents the voters.
In the lawsuit, Rao alleges 17 cases of “irregularities and illegal conduct” with absentee ballots. She says that helped incumbent mayor Joe Ganim beat Marilyn Moore.
The state Elections Enforcement Commission also launched an investigation on Monday after media reports of absentee ballot irregularities.
The City of Bridgeport did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
