Residents who live and work near the landfill in Brookhaven have complained to New York State about a strong smell of rotten eggs.
The smell comes from hydrogen sulfide gas that forms when waste is broken down. The town will be fined if the gas is not contained.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation says Brookhaven needs to take “aggressive” measures to stop the odor or face fines.
Brookhaven officials say construction work in December to cover the landfill released the gas. The town has spent about $20 million to contain hydrogen sulfide at the landfill.
The gas can cause throat irritation and breathing problems.
The town also faces a lawsuit that accuses Brookhaven of negligence in the maintenance of the landfill and causing health issues in residents.
The landfill is slated to close in 2024.
