The seventh annual Car Free Day Long Island will take place on Friday. Advocates hope to see nearly 5,000 fewer cars on the road.

Public transportation officials will promote alternatives to driving as a way to reduce traffic and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Seven thousand Long Islanders participated in the event last year, either using public transit or carpooling, preventing nearly 100 tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere.

Suffolk County is also promoting its new bike share program as an alternative.
