Connecticut regulators have approved a contract between the owner of the Millstone nuclear power plant and the state’s two major electric distribution companies.
The deal requires Eversource and United Illuminating to buy about half of Millstone's electricity output for 10 years, beginning this year. Officials say that will give the state and the region more time to expand renewable and other clean energy resources, including offshore wind power.
Dominion Energy owns the Millstone plant, based in Waterford, Connecticut. The company had suggested it could close the plant in 2023 if a long-term contract wasn’t approved. Dominion says the deal ensures the company will keep powering homes for at least the next decade.
