Fasano Seeks Tong Recusal In Tweed Runway Case

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has been asked to recuse himself from deciding whether the state should appeal a federal court ruling. That decision paved the way for a runway extension at Tweed-New Haven Airport.

Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano sponsored a state law that prohibited the extension of the runway. The court decided that measure is superseded by federal law.

Fasano wants the state to appeal the court decision, but does not want Tong involved.

He says Tong has a political relationship with his fellow Democrat, New Haven Mayor Toni Harp. He says Harp’s support for the runway will influence Tong.

“And I think this has to be looked at with not what is in the best interest of Toni Harp but what’s in the best interest of the General Assembly.”

Tong would not say if he would recuse himself.

“I have received the letter. The Office of Attorney General is analyzing the complex issues in that case. We have a process in this office, as we do for all cases and all appeals, and we are going through that process now.”

Tong says that process would take a while.
