A Board of Regents meeting at the State Education Building in Albany in 2016.

Beth Berlin will serve as acting Commissioner of the New York State Education Department starting in September.

Berlin serves as executive deputy commissioner and had a previous stint as acting commissioner in recent years.

The state Board of Regents made the announcement this week after MaryEllen Elia unexpectedly resigned.

Elia planned to reconstruct the state’s graduation standards, with changes set to launch in September.

New York’s largest teachers union has criticized Elia for not fixing glitches in the state’s computerized testing system.

Elia will leave for an unnamed, private national firm.
