Wyandanch Schools One Step Closer To Fiscal Oversight By The State

The New York State Legislature passed a bill that would appoint a fiscal oversight monitor for Wyandanch schools. The Long Island school district has had money problems in recent years.

Wyandanch approved a contingency budget this week that will reduce spending and cut bus services, afterschool programs and teacher positions.

State lawmakers say they want a state monitor for the district who will have veto power over fiscal decisions.

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre said this is not an attack on the district, but a way to ensure transparency.

“This district is plagued by financial mismanagement and improper record-keeping. When this is the case it becomes much more difficult to secure extra school funding. It means the students of this district are not getting what they deserve.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo still needs to sign the legislation to create a state monitor. Funding for the position has yet to be confirmed.
