Conn. Republicans Celebrate Gains In State Senate

Republicans in Connecticut have picked up three new seats in the state Senate. That means the state Senate is now tied, and Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman will have to serve as a tiebreaker.

The GOP picked up seats in Stonington, Meriden and Woodbridge, areas that had long been represented by Democrats. Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano says it shows Connecticut voters are ready for change.

Fasano had complained in previous budget cycles that Republicans were ignored and left out of the process. He says now Democrats will have to deal with them.

"Well, let's put it this way. They don't have a choice but to sit down and talk to us or pretty soon they're going to wake up to be a substantially minority party after the next election two years from now," Fasano said.

Senate Democratic Leader Bob Duff says the voters have spoken.

Duff said, "We have worked to correct many of the mistakes from past administrations, but the voters spoke and we have to listen to them."

Democrats and Republicans will now have to work out how to share control of the body.
