U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal declared victory over Republican challenger Dan Carter, a state Representative from Bethel. He delivered his victory speech at the Hartford Hilton on Tuesday night.
Blumenthal said in his next six years in Washington, he wants to do more to prevent gun violence.
"I pledge to you that I will continue to fight for common sense, sensible gun violence measures in the United States Congress," Blumenthal said.
Blumenthal and U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, D-Conn., partnered on the issue after the 2012 Newtown shooting.
Blumenthal said he that he also wants to unify the country.
“We are the greatest nation in the world because we build bridges, not walls. Because we celebrate our diversity. And my hope for this Congress and the next president is that we will come together.”
Blumenthal has supported immigration reform and more help for refugees.
Blumenthal's opponent Dan Carter entered the race six months ago and had little name recognition.
