Lawmakers passed a bill that would expand offshore wind energy production in Connecticut nearly tenfold.
The bill would allow the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to contract with offshore wind companies, for up to 2,000 megawatts of energy. The state has bought 300 megawatts of offshore wind energy so far.
“The idea of having this amount of potential wind energy coming to Connecticut is huge. I mean, we’re talking about enough to power 1.5 million to two million homes,” said Leah Schmalz with the Connecticut Fund for the Environment.
Connecticut’s climate goals call for 40 percent of the state’s power to come from renewable sources like wind energy by the year 2030.
The bill now goes to Governor Ned Lamont’s desk for signature.
