Connecticut Leads Country In Metal Theft Insurance Claims

The National Insurance Crime Bureau says Connecticut ranks first in the country in insurance claims filed for metal theft.

The report says thieves mostly steal copper and metal piping to sell for scrap. A spokesperson for the bureau said metal theft is usually driven by an urgent need for quick cash.

The Illinois-based nonprofit says Connecticut has the most metal theft claims per capita, almost 32 for every 100,000 residents.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean it has the most thefts. A Council of State Governments report says the national number of metal thefts is probably higher because no states comprehensively track the crime.

Davis Dunavin loves telling stories, whether on the radio or around the campfire. He started in Missouri and ended up in Connecticut, which, he'd like to point out, is the same geographic trajectory taken by Mark Twain.
