A Stony Brook University professor has been indicted after federal investigators say he stole more than $200,000 in cancer research funds.

Geoffrey Girnun is the director of Cancer Metabolomics at the school’s Renaissance School of Medicine.

The U.S. attorney’s office in New York says Girnun submitted fraudulent invoices for research equipment from sham companies to cover up his theft of grant money from Stony Brook University and the National Institutes of Health. The FBI says he used the money to pay down the mortgage on his house.

A spokesperson for Stony Brook University said the university is outraged and appalled. She said the university is cooperating with the FBI and is considered a victim in the matter.

Girnun has been placed on administrative leave.
