A federal judge sentenced an 18-year-old gang member to 55 years in prison for his role in a quadruple murder in Central Islip, Long Island.

Authorities say Josue Portillo and other members of MS-13 used machetes and an axe to kill four teenagers in 2017. They were suspected of belonging to a rival gang.

Portillo is the first of several accused gang members to plead guilty and face sentencing. He was prosecuted as an adult even though he was a minor when he took part in the murders.

Authorities plan to deport him to El Salvador when he completes his sentence.

His attorney plans to appeal.
