The labor markets in both Connecticut and Long Island grew tighter in June. Unemployment in Connecticut is at a 17-year-low, and Long Island is at an almost 30-year low.
A tight labor market makes it hard for companies to fill open positions and expand. This is especially true in specialty trades and construction on Long Island, where the number of filled positions has increased by double digits over the last year.
In Connecticut, the most in-demand jobs are cashiers and retail. About the only sector losing jobs in both states is government. Connecticut lost almost 2,000 government jobs over the year.
Long Island lost about 200 government jobs. However, those are more than offset by growth in the private sector.
