Swinging CO2 Levels Show The Earth Is 'Breathing' More Deeply
Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere cycle up and down as plants take it up in the summer and let some of it out in the winter. Over the past 50 years, these "breaths" have gotten larger, as plants in the Arctic are taking up more carbon dioxide during the warmer summers.

Fukushima Nuclear Plant Leaking 300 Tons Of Tainted Water Daily
The Japanese government has announced that radioactive groundwater is leaking from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. To try and stop it, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, which owns the plant, has proposed building an underground wall of frozen earth around the reactors. The ice wall is supposed to keep groundwater from flowing in and radioactive water from leaking out, but nobody knows for sure whether it will work.

An ecologist wondered if Hawaiian menus might help explain what happened to Hawaii's sea turtle population. But the menus revealed another marine tragedy: that local fish numbers had dropped to about a tenth of what they once were.

Astronaut Among Presidential Medal Of Freedom Winners
Astronaut Sally Ride has served as a role model for young women as the first American woman in space. It's for that reason she's one of the 16 people named as recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ride will receive the award posthumously — she died last year at the age of 61.
