The state of Connecticut has removed all patients from a Norwich nursing home where five patients died from COVID-19 recently.

The outbreak of COVID-19 at the Three Rivers Nursing Home in Norwich affected at least 22 patients and six members of staff.

It has prompted state Public Health Commissioner Deidre Gifford to order that 17 COVID patients from the home be transferred to Riverside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in East Hartford. The remaining 29 patients who are COVID-negative will be moved to a nearby nursing home.

State officials said a recent inspection of the facility found several serious violations related to infection control, staffing and other issues.

The removal of the patients effectively closes the facility.
