New York officials say it’s still unclear if schools will open in the fall, even as Long Island heads into the last phase of reopening on Wednesday.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says school districts need to have a plan for September, but the state has not made a decision if in-person instruction is possible.
“We obviously very much would like to. Nobody knows the effect this is going to have on students, socialization of young students, etc. We want kids back in school for a number of reasons, but we’re not going to say children should go back to school until we know it’s safe.”
The state Department of Health will work with education advisors to draft guidance ahead of the school year.
