With Fewer Trains, LIRR Hits Best On-Time Performance In 40 Years

The Long Island Rail Road broke its record for on-time performance last month. That’s according to LIRR officials.

The LIRR’s on-time performance for April was 98.3%, the highest in the last 40 years.

Railroad officials say the record is likely a result of reduced ridership because of the stay-at-home order in New York.

The commuter rail only has about 3% of its usual riders. Fewer riders also means the LIRR has operated 30% fewer trains since March.

The MTA plans to introduce additional safety measures, like a reservation system and temperature checks of passengers, as Long Island returns to work.
