The city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, will reopen its public golf course today. Officials say it’s in anticipation of the state lifting restrictions on some non-essential businesses next week.
Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says reopening the city-owned golf course is an opportunity for people to enjoy the outdoors, even though new protocols will be enforced to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
“But at the same time, frankly to be very blunt, it gives the city desperately needed revenue. So without overcrowding, we are going to have a very measured approach that’s going to allow people to use – we have 36 holes, that’s two full 18-hole golf courses at Fairchild Wheeler, owned by the city.”
The new protocols will require golfers to wear masks and use golf carts. Tee times will be limited and will have to be booked by phone or online.
Ganim says the city’s public parks will reopen by the weekend.
He hopes parking fees will also bring much-needed revenue to city coffers.
