A new independent task force called out Nassau County over the weekend for a lack of action in addressing higher rates of black infant and maternal mortality.
The Health Equity Task Force of Long Island says elected officials have expressed concern about the racial disparity in pregnancy and childbirth services that help reduce the deaths of mothers and babies.
But the group says black mothers are unaware of the services available. They plan to hold educational meetings to help bridge the gap.
Data from the New York State Department of Health show the black infant mortality rate was nearly four times higher in Nassau than in Suffolk.
