Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory

Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory announced he will step down next month to fill a seat on the Babylon Town Board.

Gregory wants to fill Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon’s seat. Gordon is a Democratic hopeful for New York’s 2nd Congressional District – U.S. Representative Peter King announced in November he wouldn’t run for reelection.

Gregory got his start in Babylon, working for Town Supervisor and Suffolk County Democratic Party Chair Rich Schaffer.

And Gregory hasn’t always seen eye-to-eye with County Executive Steve Bellone in steering Suffolk.

“Maintaining the independence of the Legislature is something that was important to me, doing some of the things that we’ve done, you know, some of the first in the nation, first in the state pieces of legislation.”

Gregory is expected to resign on January 15, ahead of his term limit. The County Legislature will have to hold a special election to replace him.
