Suffolk County residents will receive their property tax bills later than usual this year after a series of accounting mistakes caused a delay.
Bills typically go out at the end of the first week of December, but errors with the expected tax collection amount meant that the County Legislature had to vote this week to fix the mistakes.
There were accounting errors for two sewer district funds and the general fund tax levy.
County officials don’t expect the delay to affect homeowners who still have until January 10 to pay half of their property tax bill without penalty.
Lawmakers are expected to introduce legislation to make sure the mistake doesn’t happen again.
