Late Suffolk County Detective Receives National Policing Award

Suffolk County Police Detective William Maldonado posthumously received the U.S. Attorney General Award for Distinguished Service in Policing this week. 

He was one of 19 law enforcement officers to receive the award across the country.

Maldonado joined the Suffolk Police Department in 1987 and spent parts of his career in a unit that investigates bank robberies.

He also joined the FBI Long Island Gang Task Force and helped prosecute MS-13 gang members.

Maldonado had colon cancer and died in 2018. 

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
