Nassau County lawmakers passed a bill this week to allow cameras to be installed on the stop signs on school buses.
School districts now have to decide whether to opt in to the program.
The county will cover all costs, and hire a vendor to install and maintain the cameras.
Drivers who unlawfully pass a stopped school bus will be slapped with a $250 fine.
Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation into law last month that makes the program available statewide.
Suffolk County will consider a similar bill next week.
