A bill in New York seeks to allow college student athletes to profit off their performance.
The legislation would allow students to earn compensation for use of their name, image or likeness. They would also be allowed to obtain professional representation and receive 15% of ticket sale revenue.
Proponents of the bill say student athletes who are injured risk losing athletic scholarships that pay for their college education.
The legislation includes a requirement that colleges set up an "injured athlete fund" to provide money after graduation for athletes who suffer a career-ending or long-term injury.
The NCAA has opposed similar legislation approved in California.
