Young people do not want to live in Nassau County. That’s the findings of a report released Tuesday by the county comptroller’s office.
The report says the number of Nassau County residents under age 44 has declined more than 9% in the last decade. That’s because young people choose to move away to more affordable regions.
County Comptroller Jack Schnirman says Long Island needs to attract and retain young people, and to do so he wants lawmakers to develop communities that are walkable, diverse and close to public transportation.
“Once folks get to a point in life where they’ve sort of accumulated some savings and they’re ready to make a life decision, more than ever before, folks are making that life decision by choosing another region. And that should give us all pause. And we have to realize that the cost of doing nothing about something like that is something that we just can’t afford.”
Schnirman urged lawmakers to update zoning codes to allow for increased multi-family housing and more transit-oriented development.
