Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., speaks on Capitol Hill in Washington.

U.S. Representative Jim Himes from Connecticut has called for the impeachment of President Trump. He says the investigation is worth it, even if it doesn’t end in Trump’s removal from office.

“The time has come, Ms. Speaker, for the U.S. House. From the moment of his inauguration, this president has shown contempt for the truth, has attacked our institutions and has ignored the Constitution that he swore to defend.”

Himes was speaking on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Himes, a Democrat, says he made his decision after talking with constituents – many of whom are Republicans.

“There are lots and lots of Republicans in Fairfield County who are outraged by this president. And so the fact that I was hearing from people who used to be Republicans that they supported an impeachment inquiry was pretty powerful.”

Himes is the first member of the Connecticut congressional delegation to call for Trump’s impeachment.

The move comes after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Connecticut on Friday where she reiterated to state Democrats that she is against impeachment without further congressional investigation.
