The governors of Rhode Island and Massachusetts encourage Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont to pursue his highway toll proposal.

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker spoke after a summit with Lamont at Eastern Connecticut State University. Raimondo says it took her two legislative sessions to win approval for a truck-only toll expansion in Rhode Island.

“It was controversial. I went back again the second year, and it happened. And today we have the tolls, we have the revenue...”

Baker says there is a misconception about electronic highway tolls.

“Which is a sort of 21st century technology that for many people gets lost in the conversation about tolls. Because people think about tolls as a toll booth, which is not the way that most people play this game anymore.”

Lamont appreciated their advice.

“As Charlie and Gina were just saying, if we are going to keep economic growth here, we got to speed up our rail, we got to end the gridlock, and that’s what it is.’

Lamont says he’s prepared to make some compromises to get lawmaker support for his proposal.
