The number of shootings in New Haven has reached a seven-year high. That’s according to a crime report from the New Haven Police Department.

The city has seen 71 shootings as of November 4, compared to 46 the same time last year.

Michaela Reilly with Connecticut Violence Intervention Program, a group that tries to de-escalate conflicts that can lead to violence between young people, says they are looking into the shooting uptick.

“There hasn’t been a specific rhyme or reason that we can pinpoint yet, but we have a couple meetings and stuff to figure out what’s going on.”

Reilly says outreach workers are visiting several schools this week.

New Haven’s Police Chief recently told the Board of Police Commissioners that the shootings do not appear to be related to personal beefs, though most had been in the past.

Cassandra Basler, a former senior editor at WSHU, came to the station by way of Columbia Journalism School in New York City. When she's not reporting on wealth and poverty, she's writing about food and family.
