This workshop will be an intensive two day session featuring the art of grisaille, a one toned underpainting, embracing light, shadow and shapes. This technique, popular with old masters, allows artists to focus on value and form before introducing color, resulting in a luminous, three-dimensional effect.

Dino Rinaldi, your instructor, has learned this technique through various teachers in his twenty years as a student at the Art Students League of NY. He was taught the grisaille method, first in charcoal, then two colors mixed, to full color. He starts every painting with a grisaille and looks forward to sharing this magic to his students.

This workshop will start with a brief talk about what might make your personally arranged still life interesting and easier to paint. Then you’ll be introduced to The Atelier’s prop room where you’ll choose from a variety of interesting items to arrange for your still life painting. Dino will spend about 20-30 minutes doing a demo of one of the arrangements, painting it through a finished grisaille while allowing questions and answers throughout. He will move on to the use of color and texture. Students should have a finished still life painting by the end of day two.

This workshop will run on Saturday, October 18th and Sunday, October 19th from 10AM-4PM. The Fee for this 2-day workshop, is $295. Materials are not included but a list will be supplied upon registration.
