Pharmaceutical giant Alexion announced it will cut jobs in coming months. The New Haven-based company said the restructuring will affect 210 people, or about seven percent of its workforce.
Alexion said the changes are needed to help position the company for sustainable, long-term growth, and a spokesperson stressed that the fundamentals of the business remain strong.
Alexion has been troubled in recent months by changes in its C-suite after an internal investigation into sales practices.
Casino Bills Up
Two controversial bills dealing with the future of casino gaming in the state of Connecticut face votes on Wednesday. The legislature’s Public Safety Committee will give its verdict on the bill which would allow the partnership of the state’s two federally recognized Indian tribes to build a facility in East Windsor.
It will also consider whether to advance a competing bill which would open up commercial gaming to a bidding process. If either goes forward, they’ll then be debated by the full House and Senate.
Lawmakers are expected to be sharply divided on the issues, particularly following a cautionary opinion from the state’s attorney general, George Jepsen.
Oxford's Euro Patent
A win for South Windsor-based Oxford Performance Materials. The medical device maker said it's been granted a patent in the European Union for an implant designed to replace bone.
Oxford makes the implant with an innovative 3D printing process, which can make custom parts for particular patients. The company said the patent is an important step in its expansion into export markets.
