Internship Program

During this reporting period, our SEU hosted a student intern from Tufts University during Winter break 2012-2013 and Spring semester 2013  This intern was supervised by our News Director, Senior Reporter, and News Reporter/Host and assisted with a variety of tasks such as: digital editing, re-writing of Associated Press material and recording in the field.  When available, this intern would participate in editorial meetings.

Host event sponsored by or on behalf of a community organization relating to careers in broadcasting

On February 6, 2013, a scout from Boy Scout Troop 55 who hoped to earn a radio merit badge toured our facilities led by our Production Manager during which they talked about how radio stations operate and the opportunities available for a future career in broadcasting.  Before departing, our Production Manager assisted him as he recorded a spot.

Host event sponsored by or on behalf of an educational institution relating to careers in broadcasting

On March 5, 2013, our SEU’s News Reporter/Host spoke with a journalism class at Quinnipiac University about writing profiles as well as his experiences as a News Reporter and Host.

On March 19, 2013, our Senior Reporter addressed a group at the Fairfield Senior Center to talk about WSHU in particular, public radio in general and his experiences as a News Reporter.

Participate in Job Fair

On March 30, 2013, our SEU participated in a job fair at Columbia University sponsored by the Graduate School of Journalism.  Our News Director spoke with graduate students about career opportunities in broadcasting and journalism and conducted a number of interviews.

On April 22, 2013, our News Director appeared on a panel at a day-long workshop at the DART Center for Journalism and Trauma at Columbia University during which they discussed media coverage of the Newtown shootings.

On April 30, 2013, Cub Scout Troop 167 toured our facilities led by our Production Manager during which they talked about how radio stations operate and the opportunities available for a future career in broadcasting.

On April 16, 2013, our Senior Reporter spoke to a journalism class at Sacred Heart University about his experiences as a reporter as well as career opportunities and internships in broadcasting.

On April 22, 2013, our Senior Reporter was interviewed at a Sacred Heart University symposium entitled “Reflecting on Sandy Hook: Media and Trauma.”

On April 23, 2013, our Senior Reporter spoke to a journalism class at Sacred Heart University about his experiences as a reporter as well as career opportunities and internships in broadcasting.  This was followed by a tour of the facilities.

On June 13, 2013, our News Director conducted a presentation for the Senior Mens’ Association of Stamford at Agudath Sholom Synagogue to talk about Fairfield County Public Radio as well as her experiences as a News Reporter.

On September 10, 2013, our Development Director and Events Coordinator hosted an open house at our studios for Friends of WSHU.  Our guests received a tour of our studios and conversed with various SEU staff members about their respective responsibilities.

Attend Radio Broadcasters Convention

On October 17, 2013, our General Manager invited two Sacred Heart University students and a News Intern to accompany him to the Connecticut Broadcasters Association Convention at the Hartford Hilton.  These students were able to interact with many commercial and non-commercial educational broadcasters and learned a great deal about all aspects of radio broadcasting.

On October 26, 2013, our News Director appeared in two day-long session entitled “The Future of Journalism” at Fordham University during which she talked about covering breaking news, voice coaching and her experiences as a News Director.
