Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone wants New York state health officials to resume some activities, like museums and outdoor youth sports, earlier than planned. Arts, entertainment and recreation-based businesses are scheduled to reopen in Phase Four.
But Bellone says museums and other cultural institutions that have exhibits patrons don’t touch should be allowed to reopen ahead of schedule.
“These are very large spaces in many cases and, with capacity limits in place, we believe that many of those could be reopened safely.”
Bellone says he’s also asked state health officials to allow outdoor youth sports to resume now that Long Island has entered Phase Two.
He says the county will look to upstate regions that have already entered Phase Three for guidance on whether it’s safe to accelerate reopening.
