Sacred Heart University dedicated the opening of its newest dormitory after Holocaust survivor and political activist Elie Wiesel.
The announcement Thursday was made the week of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz where Wiesel was prisoner.
Nadine Strossen, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union, says Wiesel was an icon who encouraged people to stand up when faced with hatred.
“It is remarkable how much good can be done through ordinary individuals raising our voices, and how much harm can be done by ordinary individuals silently acquiescing in evil.”
Strossen says the best way to combat the resurgence of anti-Semitism worldwide is through an open dialogue about hate speech.
