The opening of the Southampton African American Museum has been put on hold because of poor work from the project’s assigned contractor.

The museum will require several more months of construction.

Southampton town officials were dissatisfied with the work contractor William Proefriedt had done and took him off the project in the spring. There were problems with the septic system, and much of the work remains unfinished.

Proefriedt firm’s work has had issues in the past. He is currently facing criminal charges of falsifying documents for a historic home restoration project.

He declined to comment.

Southampton Town Attorney James Burke said in an email that town officials didn’t know of his past issues before giving him the bid.
