The first debate between Democratic Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and his Republican opponent, County Comptroller John Kennedy, was held Saturday night.
The two men sharply disagreed on the state of the county’s finances. Bellone says he inherited a mess when he took over in 2012, and has closed a $500 million budget deficit.
Kennedy says the budget has increased by $150 million over that time, the county is deep in debt, and has seen seven bond downgrades.
Both candidates spoke of reforming the police department. Kennedy said the current precinct system needs to be reevaluated, Bellone said the department has to better reflect the community it serves.
The next debate is scheduled for October 21 in Kings Park.
