The Long Island Rail Road says the new Elmont station will be fully operational in late 2022.
The station will serve the 19,000-seat arena for the Islanders at the Belmont Racetrack.
The arena has been a concern for some local residents and groups who say the construction and additional traffic will harm their community.
Supporters say the train station will solve traffic congestion issues. They say the project as a whole would be an economic boon for the area.
The station is expected to cost more than a $100 million with private and state funding.
