East Hampton Airport expects to see its air traffic increase by 10% this year over last year. That’s according to a midyear report released by the airport.
The report from the airport manager showed air traffic and complaints have already increased this year. Residents complained about noise from jets, helicopters and seaplanes at a public meeting.
Bridgehampton resident Sandy Mancini says her family witnessed a near crash between a helicopter and a seaplane.
“My husband, children and I watched in horror, helplessly, as the two aircraft hurtled toward each other. At the very last second, the seaplane turned north sharply. Those aircraft came within seconds of colliding in the skies of Bridgehampton over my house.”
The town has started a process that would allow noise or operational restrictions on aircraft, but some residents say the airport should be closed altogether.
The town would be legally allowed to shut the airport in 2021.
