Babylon Landfill Expansion To Save Money, Promote Sustainability

Babylon, Long Island, has a plan to expand the town’s landfill facility in self-sustainable ways.

The landfill in West Babylon houses thousands of cubic yards of ash from trash that’s burned.

Town officials want to build new storage walls made out of 65,000 cubic yards of hardened ash, instead of concrete. That will allow the facility to expand and have a larger capacity.

The town would save $1.3 million by switching from concrete to ash, and could extend the facility's life by 10 years until the new storage space is full.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has the final say on the plan. The approval would be the first of its kind in the state.
