A new contract for Suffolk County will extend the government’s financial commitment to several non-profit health centers for five more years, though the county will provide less funding.
The finalized contract will reduce the county’s financial obligation to the health centers by more than $1 million.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says the $12 million contract provides enough financial stability for eight non-profit health centers to serve 80,000 residents who don’t have insurance or are underinsured.
A twice-a-year review included in the contract would allow the county to further reduce or eliminate the subsidy altogether.
This could incentivize the centers to enroll more patients in Medicaid or Medicare.
