The Red Cross in Connecticut says it needs blood donations and previous donors may notice more calls asking them to schedule an appointment.

“The summer is a really challenging time for the Red Cross to collect blood. You know there’s a lot going on, and we get it, life gets in the way. I mean you’re dealing with camps and pick-up schedules and vacations and wanting to go to the beach, but the need for blood never stops and hospital patients don’t always get to decide when they’re gonna need that blood,” said Kelly Isenor, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross in the region.

Isenor says because school is out and many people are on vacation, about 450 fewer blood drives were scheduled during the Fourth of July week.

“What happens is when there’s not as many opportunities to donate, you know donors have to try a little bit harder, things like that, we tend to see a drawdown in the supply.”

Isenor encourages potential donors to sign up for an appointment online.
