Where Stars and Galaxies Come From

At the December 9, 2024 program of Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County (HFFC) theoretical astrophysicist Lachlan Lancaster, PhD, will return to explain the basics of how galaxies are formed in the universe and how stars and planets are formed within those galaxies. He will also discuss why these processes are hard to understand, what the most interesting open questions are, and how we can try to answer them with upcoming observational and theoretical work.

Dr. Lancaster is the primary author of many publications which focus on the regulation of star formation and the role that winds from massive stars play in this process. He is a graduate of New Canaan High School, Carnegie Mellon University (B.S. Physics), University of Cambridge (Masters of Advanced Study in Astrophysics), and earned a PhD (Astrophysics) at Princeton University. He is currently a Junior Fellow in the Simons Society of Fellows, working at Columbia University.

This meeting is free and open to all. Join us at the Wilton (Connecticut) Quaker Meetinghouse for the presentation and come to the social gathering beforehand. Gourmet pizza and refreshments will be served from 6:30-7:00 PM. The presentation will start at 7:00. We will also be recording and broadcasting this meeting virtually via Zoom for anyone who is unable to join us in person.
